“Don’t,” I said and pointed my finger at Alfie. “He came in here and started it. And how many times have we been told to keep the entertainment happy?”

Alfie laughed. “I don’t think they had that in mind. Anyway, you ready?” he asked.

“Oh yeah, beyond ready. I think it’s going to be epic.”

“I agree, and it better be since we’re down to the wire here.”

I chuckled at the truth of that. We really were down to the wire.

Because the show wasn’t computerized, Alfie and I were both in charge of ensuring the equipment went off at the right time. We’d written up a script and cue sheet of what should happen when, using a recording of Hayden’s music while we practiced. That was cool because it gave us a valid excuse to play with all the equipment, but I was also a bit nervous about missing an important cue.

Regardless of my concerns, the rehearsal went off without a hitch. When Hayden and the band finished their last number, they jumped up and down on stage, hugging each other and giving horns with their hands toward me and Alfie.

“Y’all,” I said when they calmed down enough to hear us, “It’s good. It’s real good.”

“So,” the younger guy who played base said. I couldn’t remember what they called him, Mo, or something like that. “Does that mean we can go play in the park now?”

I chuckled. “It does. Just let me get security to join you.”

I knew Hayden had his own bodyguard, but I also knew without one of our in-house guards accompanying them, they’d be waiting in the ride lines for hours.

Just as I was about to turn to Alfie for a report, Hayden slipped behind me, giving me a hug. “That was so awesome, you guys. Like the best show I’ve ever had!”

Alfie chuckled. “Old school can sometimes be better, but if you like it, and the big wigs are okay with it, maybe they’ll let us help your team adapt the program to use at other venues.”

“That would be awesome. You all are the best!”

Hayden nuzzled and kissed the back of my neck and whispered in my ear, “I’m guessing I can’t pull you away?”

I was grinning like an idiot when I turned my head to whisper back, “That’d be a no, but go have fun with your friends. Alfie and I have some loose ends to tie up before Thursday’s performance.”

He squeezed me tight and then disappeared back up on stage with the band as they prepped to head out into the park.

I quickly radioed the security team assigned to the band, letting them know they were about to leave the stage. “No problem,” one of them said. “We’ll show them a good time.”

“Not too good,” I answered, then blushed when I realized what I’d just said. Luckily, they ignored me, although I could all but feel them snickering at my remark.

“So, jealous much?” Alfie said as he began to tape down the wires leading to the stage.
